8static is a Philadelphia-based chiptune and electronic arts event series celebrating the fusion of retro gaming and modern electronic music and art. We showcase performances by artists who push the limits of sound chips, use technology in an interesting way, or comment on video game culture and art.

Beyond live events, 8static fosters a community for artists and fans who explore chip music, pixel art, performance arts, hacking hardware or sofware, creative visual coding, and creative culture in general.

8STATIC Philly’s premier 8-bit/chiptune concert and video party, returns this month with music performances by Ovenrake, Inverse Phase and Nanode. Dino Lionetti of Cheap Dinosaurs will provide live visuals throughout the show. Baltimore’s Brendan Becker, known by his stage name Inverse Phase , uses Atari, Commodore, and Nintendo hardware to compose his own chiptune music and video game soundtracks. He regularly speaks and hosts workshops on game music, chiptunes, and composing. He’s also known for Pretty Eight Machine , his Nine Inch Nails tribute album. His live sets are unpredictable and always entertaining. Ovenrake is the performing alias of Philly-based musician Dakota Clark. An 8static veteran, he writes electronic music using various pieces of hardware and software — all under the umbrella of low-fidelity sounds — but his primary instrument is the Nintendo Game Boy. His music spans a wide spectrum of styles and emotions, from funky and danceable to ambient and reflective. Hailing from Connecticut, Sam Sher, a.k.a. Nanode , is a lo-fi and EDM producer who works in various programs, such as Nanoloop, LSDJ and Ableton Live 9. His dream of making music came to life starting in 2013 with several projects and collaborative efforts; today, he’s producing fun, exciting music for people of all ages and backgrounds. Dino Lionetti (of the Philadelphia-based chiptune band Cheap Dinosaurs ) will be accompanying each musician with his unique visuals, all entirely handmade in a program known as Processing. Using his own algorithms and key commands, Dino interprets the live audio and creates beautiful psychedelic backdrops. 8static will kick off with an informative workshop at 7 p.m., in which Inverse Phase will present the second of a two-part discussion on the demoscene and underground computer art in the 70s and 80s. The presentation will be followed by open mic at 8 (five minutes/one song max.) and the main show at 9.

It's set to take place the weekend of Oct. 15-17, 2015, once again at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia! The past two festivals have been absolutely amazing and unforgettable, and we feel confident that we're going to (somehow) make things even more awesome this year. We have a killer lineup for this benefit show to raise money to improve our events and raise festival awareness. Famitracker Worksop/Open Mic In the tradition of 8static's past, we will kick things off with an informative workshop by ap0c on composing with famitracker at 7pm, followed by open mic at 8pm (five minutes/one song max.), and dive right into the show at 9pm. Visual Performance SBthree ( Rochester, NY ) Using a mix of extremely simple 3-D objects and abstract pixel art, Steven Boyar ( SBthree ) creates looping animations and strings them together to music. A handful of glitchy video effects are added for good measure. It's anyone's guess how the scientist plans to hypnotize us. Performers Danimal Cannon ( Buffalo, NY ) Guitarist, chiptuner, producer, engineer, MUSICIAN. You might know this Buffalo, NY, native from work with Armcannon , Metroid Metal , or Weaponex or his numerous PAX and MAGfest appearances, his acclaimed 2011 album "Roots," or "Parallel Processing," his collaboration with Zef. But until you catch his impossible grooves and clever hooks, unmistakable guitar solos and intricate LSDJ arrangements live, you don't know Danimal Cannon . TREY FREY ( PHL ) Straight outta the WV, and recently relocated to Philadelphia, Trey Frey creates music using two synced 1989 gameboys. Solarbear ( PHL ) Another Philly transplant moving in all the way from Lexington, Kentucky. Solarbear makes progressive metal chiptunes with a bit of that good feelin' thrown in. This is an exciting new project from renaissance man Carl Peczynski, whom you might remember from such chip personas as Oxygenstar, Radlib, SadNES, and a million others. I'm told he hails from the planet Zaxxon and "is interested in one thing: to provide the people of Earth with smooth grooves and sassy vibes." Soundblaster 16 jams? Yes please. But get ready to really kick it up with Kris Keyser , another extremely intense and amazing musician (and all-around nice guy, too). Hailing from Ann Arbour, Michigan, Watabou describes his project as an "amalgamation of extensive electronic programming, punishing physical externalization, subconscious realization, and constructive manipulation" of art and himself. He's one of those guys who truly pushes the boundaries of the Game Boy sound chip, so you'll want to be there for this opportunity to see him up close. But regardless of what happens in terms of the notoriously unpredictable Philly-area weather, we're gonna have to amend that silly old trope in order to make up for the fact that the next 8static takes place at the very end of the month and features a killer, super-exciting lineup. This show — which we'll again hold at The North Star Bar & Restaurant , 2639 Poplar Street, Philadelphia — promises to take us into the Spring in a manner that will be anything but lamb-like. Kentucky's classy Mr. Wimmer will bring his instrument- and vocal-infused chip rock to the stage. You might recall hearing him play some of his dreamy, Roy Orbison-influenced songs at previous open mics. We're all very excited to see a full set, and you should be too! Speaking of open mics, you also might've seen SNESEI showing off his super fun tunes before the main acts at previous 8statics. Hailing all the way from Detroit, SNESEI has already warned us that he plans to rock every single face with a high-energy, extremely danceable set. If you were at last month's 8static, you know how excellent The North Star Bar & Restaurant , 2639 Poplar Street, Philadelphia, is as a venue for our event. Many, many thanks to the North Star staff for helping us put on a great and successful show! With that in mind, we're excited to be hosting February's lineup there once again. Please join us at our fantastic new home! You'll see music from return performer Disassembler , who has been hitting up the open mics in recent months with his creative, melodic Nanoloop/LSDJ compositions. And it's been almost a full year since we've heard the dark and hypnotic sounds of Dauragon on the 8static stage. Another unique Nanoloop user, Dauragon is known for getting a truly original feel out of the program: moody and funky, danceable and intelligent. Finally, you'll get a bit of a different set from me, Chipocrite . Instead of planning out a setlist in advance, I'm going to be rolling a 20-sided die to pick each song, live and on the spot. We hope you all had a fantastic holiday season, however you spent it. We've been keeping ourselves busy with various important and exciting projects: fulfilling Kickstarter rewards, planning and performing at the greatest music/video game convention of all time , putting the final touches on long-awaited new albums… You know, the usual. But fear not! We haven't been so busy that the show couldn't go on, and we're stoked to announce this month's unique and awesome 8static lineup, set for this Saturday, January 11. We've got music from Auxcide , who is known for creating a sonic assault of Game Boys synced with synths and other external hardware. Not only did he recently wow the audience during the Chiptune Showcase at the aforementioned MAGFest, he also just released not one but TWO albums on the 8static label . Also on the bill is Phoenix-based chip-hop rapper Mega Ran . Originally a Philly native himself, Mega Ran has become a mainstay of VGM-related conventions and events over the past few years, and he consistently puts on an energetic, entertaining show that always gets the crowd going. And even though the holidays have come and gone, we have a special gift for you this month: Philly chip supergroup Cheap Dinosaurs will finally be releasing a new collection of studio recordings!! The album, titled "Triangle Trash," features the definitive versions of several of the group's live staples. It's a true full-band effort, where guitars and Game Boys blend seamlessly to create a wall of chip-prog sound that will truly rock your face off, all tied together by group leader Dino Lionetti's impeccable production skills. Style Welcome back to our first show since 8static Festival last month! This will be our first show at Underground Arts , just a few blocks south of our old venue. It's one of the city's most exciting new spots, and we're stoked to be moving our event there. So spend a night out of the cold and get away from the Thanksgiving shopping insanity at 8static on November 30th. First up, we have one of the heavy hitters at 8static fest, Trey Frey ! Currently living in West Virginia, Trey has been crafting intense electro-dance LSDJ jams around the mid- Atlantic region for a few years now. Using up to four game boys simultaneously, Trey's wizardry has built a reputation for one of the most exciting young performers in the chip scene. After bringing down the house at BRKFest and 8static Fest, he'll treat us to one more show before making his MAGFest debut on the main stage in January! 8static's own Animal Style will be returning to his first 8static in over a year. Much of his music is new and unheard unless you attending some of the other events he's played around the area. Animal Style has always pushed the envelope for creativity and mixed media with his music. He's written many fantastic tracks on Game Boy, NES, Sega Genesis and more, accompanied by his custom square-wave distorted guitar, nebulaphones and byte beats. We can assure you that this show will be full of similar surprises. Coming all the way down from Boston, we welcome Glenntai in his 8static debut. A seminal voice in the chip scene with his clip stream show, Glenntai is also known for his highly energetic and hype stage performance. Don't miss this chance to see one of Boston's gems. Last but not least, Defiant Systems is playing his first main-stage spot for 8static. Originally writing a lot of dark and moody industrial-influenced compositions on LSDJ, he's begun moving into crafting tracks on the Philly-fave console, the Sega Genesis! Visuals will be provided by Philly’s own Enerjawn , whom you might remember from last month's festival (if you were able to piece your brain back together after his set). A veteran Philadelphia hacker and visualist currently residing in New York, NO CARRIER will teach us how to create visuals for the Nintendo Entertainment System! The workshop follows with our 60 minute open mic, and then our headliners: First Act: Storm Blooper started as a regular at our open-mics, started playing small shows around Philadelphia, and now rightfully takes the opener 8static slot! All grown up? Don’t count on it. Storm Blooper keeps his sense of humor. Direct, fun, and batteries fully charged, these are Gameboy tracks to keep you dancing! Second Act: The high-speed chip pop of Kentucky! Kentucky? Damn straight! Solarbear writes for Gameboy and what comes out is fast, melodic, and caffeinated. Get ready to spill some Kentucky all over the stage and into the crowd. This act is a lot of fun to watch! Final Act: Hailing from Paris, France, we are excited to present the headliner Ultrasyd! Gaining momentum after a European tour and a veteran of Blipfestival 2011, Ultrasyd writes insistent and hypnotic music with a demoscene-meets-house sound. This means all new tracks debuting live at our show! Come listen at the show or tune in to Arecibo radio to get a preview before anyone else! A_Rival has composed music for high profile releases like "Street Fighter X Megaman" and "Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix". Long-time 8static friend, Inverse Phase will be making his 8static debut this month! Inverse Phase is the man behind the legendary Nine Inch Nails tribute album, "pretty eight machine" and video game composer for games such as shuttle scuttle & super smash land. He will be hitting us with a few surprises this show, don't be surprised if some of audience winds up on stage participating during he set! Philadelphia's own Saint , of cipher prime studios, will be treating us to all new, vocal-based, jams. Last time he jammed out with an entirely improvised set, it's always exciting to see saint perform and bring us something new! We've got another fantastic show of national acts planned for you this month!! First we have the legendary Br1ght Pr1mate returning from their winter hibernation in Boston. After playing such big events as MAGFest 11 and PAX East, it will great to welcome back to a more intimate environment at 8static! The duo, composed of intricate LSDJ dance jams with soulful female vocals, are potential future superstars in the scene. Having crafted a special Star Trek-themed set for our Tuesday Tune-out series (complete with costumes and new songs!), they will be bringing all that hard work to show at 8static proper! Animal Style will be sharing his custom visuals for their set. It's been over a year since Note! 's last show at 8static and he will be coming back this month with all new material for his upcoming album release (possibly available at the show!). Note!'s infectious & complex dance grooves will keep all of us on our feet during his set. We really look forward to having him back since our move to PhilaMOCA. One of our most original sounding musicians is coming up from Washington, D.C. Dauragon has mastered the art of super-bass on the Gameboy with nanoloop. This month we are bringing you four national acts to shake off those February blizzards and celebrate our first anniversary at PhilaMOCA ! The legendary Nullsleep , will be returning to 8static! This scene pioneer should be no stranger to most of you, as he has been a major scene player since the classic chip music era. No one should miss this rare opportunity to see his live set! Nullsleep's dark soundscapes and intelligent dance composition will break through to even the most skeptical listener. It's an honor to have him back at 8static again after what feels like way too long! We had to reschedule scene chameleon, Doomcloud 's set last month due to the blizzard. But he's back on the lineup this month and ready to go all-out! He may perform under many different monikers, but this time he will be completely redefining an existing one! Presenting his live debut of all-live hardware, NES dance music, you could almost call this Doomcloud 2.0! Don't let the name or platform change interrupt your perception of what will be an amazing groove session as we close out the night in style! We have two debuts at this 8static! First, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, we have Noisewaves ! Consisting of a drummer, guitar player and an NES, Noisewaves' music has a bittersweet post-rock influenced sound. You don't have to be a fan of darkwave music to enjoy Void Vision's haunting melodic synths, ethereal vocals & graceful execution of the genre. Void Vision's use of vintage analog synthesizers & gear will bring you back to a part of of the 80′s that was mostly tucked away in underground music scenes. Some of her material has even been arranged on LSDJ especially for 8static! If you haven't had a chance to catch this artist at previous engagements, prioritize this on your calendars now! San Francisco's heavy chip-scene player Crashfaster , will be returning to 8static with a vengeance. Some of you may have caught his solo performance two years ago & will remember his somber EBM / industrial influenced music with vocoder distorted vocals. Crashfaster now has expanded to include a guitarist, drummer & female vocalist to round out the live performance! Crashfaster will be rocking their heavier sound at MAGFest this year, we are proud to welcome them back to 8static on their east coast tour! Emerging artist, SSD Engage , are a trio from Cincinnati, Ohio comprised of members of S.P.R.Y., Sp00ked & Disabletron. Fresh off the release of their new album, "Nostalgia Paradigm", SSD Engage will be treating us to their compelling form of improvisational dance music, utilizing two gameboys & a drum machine. Back in 2008, the legendary Bit Shifter played the very first 8static at Studio 34. We are very honored to bring him back for our anniversary this month (as he also celebrates his birthday) and blow our minds with amazing LSDJ dance grooves. Coming off his iconic Blip Festival performance this year, Radlib makes his 8static debut and will close out the night with some new material for us. Staging a retro-dance party with dual vintage FM synthesis enabled laptops, he will have everyone on their feet dancing to his upbeat jams. Our very own Philadelphia showcase artist this year is the amazing an0va . A little math-rock permeates his hybrid offerings that are both cerebral and emotional. See why he took the community by storm last year with his debut release, "The Teaching Machine". We are very proud to have him representing phillychip! Last, but not least we have some freshly emerging talent from Michigan, Nikola Whallon . Having a diverse background in music, Nikola has impressed us this year with several killer open mic performances at 8static. He performed at MAGStock (sister event to the blockbuster MAGFest) this summer & we welcome him to our show this month. Our visualists all come from Philly this month. 8static founder, NO CARRIER returns along with Chromacle and Animal Style . Since blowing our minds here one year ago, Danimal has brought his guitar / game boy combo up & down the east coast on tour with rock-opera super-group, the Protomen and rocked huge events such as Blip Festival, MAGFest & PAX East. It's an honor to welcome him back to Philadelphia!! On the other side of the Mason-Dixon line we welcome the 8static debut of LSDJ wizard Trey Frey . Trey's infectious dance grooves & high energy performance has earned him a dedicated fan base in West Virginia & Maryland. His complex & densely-layered jams will surely win over anyone who has yet to experience him live. Oven Rake is joining us from across the country, all the way from Tacoma, WA. Best known for his funky gameboy electronica, last month saw the debut of his entry into post-rock with the Boy's Club project. We can't wait to hear what he will bring to 8static! Philadelphia's own Animal Style twisted our minds with his special blend of organic / digital art for visuals at his last 8static. He has been working on totally new material that he will debut this show! The real-time rendering of game engines opens up possibilities for audiovisual performance. Game art duo Foci + Loci will present an examination of their work process in Little Big Planet 2 providing an opportunity for participants to collectively build and perform in a simulated environment. This month, 8static is going to be an awesome display. Returning to Philly after a far too long is Bubblyfish who's unique, high energy jams get a crowd moving in all the best ways. Also returning to the 8static stage this month is Philly local Dain Saint , who will be performing an improvisational set of his futuristic jazz inspired, but danceable tunes. Making his first appearance for a full set at 8static, we have Watabou , coming all the way from Michigan, his blend of high energy chipmusic with screamed vocals blew minds at the open mic in April. For this month's workshop we have The Dutchess to teach you the basics of how to use Deflemask, a multiplatform tracker with support for many different kinds of soundchips. Also this month, Mash Those Buttons has given us a few copies of Infinity Shred's (formerly Starscream) latest EP, which we will be giving away in between sets with trivia questions, so make sure your brains are ready! We know some of you couldn't make it to this year's amazing Blip Festival, so this month we've got a treat for you: almost everyone playing this month was featured in some form at this past Blip Fest! Philly's own Chromacle tore through attendees' eyes from the visuals booth at Blip, but here, he's going to be front and center providing an audiovisual barrage. CHILLBRAVE may not have performed as a unit at Blip, but you may have seen Tate (half of CHILLBRAVE) performing with FlashHeart, but don't think you know what's coming. Their pounding, and masterfully composed songs will be sure to get you dancing. If you were there to witness Kris Keyser 's set at Blip Fest you would have seen the cult-like reverence the crowd had for him. If Kris can do one thing, it's drive a crowd, and if he can do another, and we know he can, it's making awesome tunes that will get any crowd pumped. Our final musician this month is none other than MisfitChris . At blip you may have seen him on stage surrounded by the other performers, while the crowd was going nuts. We can't promise that there'll be any worshipping like there was at Blip, but by the end of this set you may have some thoughts about where to direct your prayers. On visuals for the night is the famed mad-scientist/artist Batsly Adams . He blew the crowd's minds at blip and now he's coming back to 8static to show you all what's up. This is a packed show, and it'll surely be an 8static to remember! The workshop this month features DJ Cutman with some pointers on how to get the most out of Ableton Live. This month, 8static's lineup is going to seriously blow some minds. For our second show at PhilaMOCA we've got some serious talent for you all. If you've seen him playing at the open mics lately you'll know that Disassembler brings serious bass, and danceable grooves. He'll be treating your ears to his unique brand of Nanoloop beats. Also playing this month is Baltimore's Shawnphase , who takes a different view on things with real rocking jams. With a metal influence and chip medium his awesome tunes are not something to be missed. Third up is a legend both in 8static history and in chip music. All the way from the west coast, after having seen Tokyo and Melbourne, Trash80 is coming to Philly. His last performance in Philadelphia, back in November of 2009, is still spoken of in hushed voices as one of the greatest performances that 8static has ever seen. And keeping your vision entranced, Visualicious will be providing her unique digital stylings. If you've seen her visuals you know it's unlike any other! This is not a show you want to miss! Before the show gets started, at 7pm we'll be having a workshop with Dino Lionetti , of Cheap Dinosaurs, who will be talking about how to write chip music with odd time signatures. Poster designed by The Dutchess Well this is unexpected. After three years who ever thought we'd be moving? But we are, so we went ahead and made our last show at Studio 34 a really awesome show! D&D Sluggers , an upstart chip music band from North Carolina is making their way up to Philly and bringing with them their own brand of upbeat chiprock, which is sure to please. SKGB is making a return to the 8static stage, after all, what kind of blowout would it be without a Philly performer. After spending many months studying performance art and tea making in the Himalayas he is returning and bringing with him all kinds of new lessons learned about the dark arts of Drum'n'Bass. Note! has finally made his way onto an 8static lineup. After shaking booties at every show he's played, finishing to immense cheers and cries for more, he's coming to 8static, armed with bassy, dancehall-influenced beats (and the occasional dub horn). It's a good thing this is our last show here because after this set there might not be a floor left to dance on. Animal Style will be providing the visuals for this show, coming with his trademark tripped out genesis stylings, ready to please eyeballs and hype your minds. We're super excited to announce this month's lineup, as its been in the works for a while. Read the bios from the artists below and you'll see why this just might be the most emo 8static ever: Starscream is Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud of New York City, two italo disco obsessors who make emotional music with Commodore 64's and Nintendo Game Boy's. Hovering in the internet somewhere between Portland and Chicago, Greenleaf is an electronic pen-pal collaboration between Asif Siddiky and Drew Fernando. Inspired by a mutual love for disturbing cinematic moments, their music pairs rich, dream-like atmospheres with sharp edges and crushing beats. Bear & Walrus is Chad Clikeman and Zachary Reese. They blend 8-bit music with piano power ballads, noisy post-rock and good intentions. enso is Alex Bond, a live visualist and illustration student from NY currently living in Philly. He enjoys art nouveau, old computers, outer space, and good vibes. His work has been exhibited at the Esther M. Klein Gallery in Philadelphia and at the Playlist show at iMAL in Brussels. Still remembering the awesome time we had at the first 8static we have been working hard to bring you more 8-bit goodness. The next show will be on January 10th again at the wonderful Studio34 . We have some great performers lined up for you: from Buenos Aires 8GB is bringing his beats to Philly as well as Anamanaguchi and Rhinostrich from NYC and Animalstyle from Philly. VBLANK and NO CARRIER will again dazzle us with their video. We are planning to have 8static monthly so Philly can get its 8-bit fix on a regular basis. We already have a great lineup for February so tell your friends to get ready to have their brains made all pixely next year. More details about the January show to come.
